I worked there for a decade. Father did 40 and brother is probably at 20yrs.
Find an older one back when they were made by fitters. Under james debney the fitters [a high skill high pay job] got bumped out of their jobs and got huge paycuts to crappy jobs or shown the door. They were replaced with section 8 immigrant women on assembly lines and the quality went to sh1t. The pay savings went into the board of director bonuses naturally.
Old models without the trigger lock are highly desireable in the collector world but its purely symbolic among gun nuts. The trigger lock didnt play any role in the action, it was viewed as s&w sleeping with the enemy when they agreed to clinton era "gun control" concessions back when the brady bill was a big deal and mfrs were getting sued by anyone who got shot. They conceded to put on a lock to be immune from the suits when the other makers all said no. The market boycotted and the plant almost closed. From 3000 people to like 400. Started making mowers, snowblowers and bikes!
Anyway you can do a little hand fitting in any of the newer MIM trigger guns and get them light and smooth just by trimming some springs and polishing. But it'll never hold the high value of a pre lock.
Performance center is just bling anymore. Dont believe the hype, its purely cosmetics.
Make sure the cylinder stop indexes the cylinder to the barrel nice and tight and that the yoke to frame joint is pretty tight. Those will make a pretty accurate wheel gun if the trigger weight is good n low.
On the pistols you wanna see a good fit where the snout of the barrel is captured by the front of the slide.. And where the back of the barrel engages up into battery with the back of the slide. If the barrel and slide are tight fit itll be repeatable even if the slide feels sloppy on the frame.
Shields are internally good, same as a full m&p but bodyguard is junk, throw away guaranteed to wear out innards. The 1911E is pretty decent. Remsport makes killer 1911s. Hes a friend of mine.Eldiablo, jamespmack, cke and 5 others Thank this. -
