Detention or no?

They should have said that this is a work in pick up or it would end up a work in after arriving inevitably late. I avoid such pick ups because I have little tolerance to be on a shipper's mercy to get loaded and then possibly at a receiver's side. I actually bailed out on a few such pick ups after discovering that they sent me there without making me aware that I was to perform a recovery load. I will never tolerate deception. Now I know better how to avoid such loads by simply seeing who the shipper is - some shippers never have open window FCFS pick ups.
I might consider a recovery load but only if the detention is secured and more importantly the receiver has a firm delivery appointment for this particular "recovered" load and I have to verify it over the phone.
As far as the detention here, it is little you can do after you are loaded. It is up to them to do the right thing or not. I think you deserve it and if it was up to me, I'd pay you some but I don't think I'd make a good broker by being so generous to carriers.

I had a fun one today.

Broker says delivery appointment is at 5pm. About 3pm and 1 hour from arriving to delivery, they say the receiver changed it to 1am. We go check in at receiver anyway, they say it’s always been 1 am since the order was sent in and this has happened several times before.

Clearly the broker is locked into a contract, and with freight plentiful, they can’t find trucks to deliver at 1am without taking huge losses. So, they sucker someone into the load by lying, and then change the story and expect the carrier to bend over and deal with it.

Unfortunately, they miscalculated and booked on a carrier who has multiple trailers and a yard nearby. So, now it’s pay a $250 redelivery, and there are limited time slots that we have to be able to go redeliver it. I may even hit them with trailer detainment as well. I offered to turn it into a drop trailer but that wasn’t acceptable to them.

Games go both ways and I’m in no hurry to get their load there without a time that works, and extra pay.

Edit: Why not just wait until 1am? Because we already had a loaded trailer back in the yard for this truck to have 200 miles away by tomorrow morning. We would lose money, plus screw an honest shipper and broker on the other load. Not to mention HOS.

Yikes, that's a shady thing to do to a carrier. Excuse my ignorance, but is it against the rules here to share who the receiver is? We've had issues with some of the bigger grocery distributors in the past (fairly infrequently but its such a PITA to deal with I remember almost every time it happened) where there was some type of disconnect between the actual receiver and their centrally located scheduling team, and they let us know at the last minute that they moved our appointment time. A couple of times I even forwarded the email we received from the customer just so the carrier knew I wasn't doing anything shady.

Doesn’t matter who the Shipper is, In Midwest’s case, the Broker was the Culprit. Some think they’re being smart by lying, they need to be held accountable, and hopefully they’re lies will backfire on them. The Broker shot himself in the foot, I doubt Midwest will take another load from him. Every time something like that happens to me, I swear I’m going to start calling every receiver and verify appointments. But I rarely do. At least the Broker was working with Dino, instead of stringing him along. Never know, might get some good loads from him in the future. A lot of Brokers appreciate being reasonable, and especially honest communication. Honesty is truly the best policy. No matter how bad the info. No surprises that way.
