I have no idea what happened to this tire because the entire rest of the tire has deep tread and everything is good except for just that one spot.

It was like that when I bought the trailer.

Reg says two or more grooves. What is the depth?

That looks like just a cosmetic mold defect. Just extra flash that didn’t take the proper shape in the mold. Take to a tire shop that has a regrooving machine and have them cut it out of the groove. Its legal but ugly and It won’t hurt anything but may make some noise as it wears. They should have sent it back for 100% credit when it was new. It is too late for them to return for defect credit now. Bet you $100 they probably didn’t even notice it at install.

I can see the secondary casing. It would not pass DOT in my shop.

If you’ve ever been offered to buy “blems” at a reduced rate that is an example of that. Still safe but not cosmetically perfect.

Where? It’s just extra tread rubber that the mold did not put a groove or sipes in. Each section of Michelin mold is around 2” wide so that particular section of steel mold was bad. They could have cured a 100 of them under that dot number before they noticed. They won’t scrap them for that they just sell them to a dealer at reduced prices.

If you look at the lowest wear point, you can see the line in the different rubber compounds. It is oval shaped. The tire is worn into the casing or the reusable portion of the tire and is beyond wear limits. Per Federal DOT- No tire can be worn into this zone in any major tread groove. You can see it more clear if you zoom on the photo.
