Currently in CDL school, just finished first week of driving.

First day had usual issues learning to shift but eventually got the rhythm down and made it up and down the gear pattern to 10th and back to 3rd pretty smooth by end of first day.

Second day, we did small course on live streets about 15-20 min drive and took it slow and had no issues except one missed shift turning onto feeder road.

Third day I collapsed. Made it a 1/4 mile from the school and proceeded to miss every other gear, missed 7th gear no less then 5 times and basically lost my mind and confidence. It got so bad I wanted to just stop and quit.

I don’t understand how I shift worse now then my first day. Instructor said I was shifting to slow, so I tried to speed up but it made it worse till he had to slam it in gear to keep up going on traffic. Very frustrating.

Do I need to request a session on the shifting range before the live streets again?

Try not to get so nervous. Go in with the mindset that you're gonna mess up a bit because you're new. A 10 speed is 400 rpms between shifts. Bring it up to 1600 and it'll drop back in at 1200.

If you miss that gear don't keep trying to shove it in, go one gear lower. Keep calm and don't stress about it, even tho it's hard not to

You had an off day, don't worry just get back at it. I initially had trouble going from 6th to 7th. Practice going from 6th to 7th while parked over and over to get the feel of it. Don't grip the shifter too hard when going from 6th to 7th. Just come out of 6th, feel that soft wall and go straight up. And take the slack out of the gear before you clutch.Get that left foot way up on the clutch pedal, it'll make it way easier to do quick and shallow bumps on the clutch pedal.

So one thing I did change was seat height. Instructor was giving us a hard time for having the seat height so high, he had it adjusted about on the floor when he drove us out the first day. So I tried lowering it a little 2-3 inches and it totally changed the way the clutch felt to me plus I think it changed my entire position and view etc.

So what do you mean way up on the clutch pedal? Like moving my foot higher as in sliding it fwd? and using more heal?

Ok I will try and relax. I know I got frustrated, the other students commented to me afterwards and said wow you get mad when you mess up. I am older then my truck mates so I felt pressured to do as good as them and that made it worse. I need to just worry about me I think on Monday.

I’m 6’4” and love the seat up high. It gives me better visibility.

Exactly, yes. Using more heal. I’ve a size 12 and have to turn my foot to the left a ways to get enough heal on the pedal. But what a difference it makes.
