I drunk-bought this last year. Hurricane Sally was the perfect time to pull this out and get my mind of the rising flood waters.
Please let me know how I can make the Cat 3406 engine more realistic. I just went off the pictures on the box and instructions.
Specific questions, what color is the firewall? Does it match the exterior paint color like every car and truck I’ve ever owned, or is it black?
What color is the underside of the hood? Same as exterior or black. And underneath side of the fenders.
Doesn’t the 5th wheel grease have a reddish black color?
I’m doing the orange with white body stripes paint scheme.

The engine, believe it or not, should be an off-white colour. Paccar painted the factory CAT engines white back in that era.
Firewall is typically the same colour as the cab. The underside of the hood/fenders I believe are just unfinished fibreglass, maybe a bit of paint overspray. Sometimes you'll see numbers written on the fibreglass in like a Sharpie pen.MericanMade Thanks this. -
Same model of engine and same model KW. Before I pulled it apart for rebuild:
During rebuild. Its a brighter white than factory but it looks better IMO. Colour I used is CAT power module white:

Good tips on the rest, too. So what color would unfinished fiberglass be? White? Light grey? I can definitely do overspray.650cat425 Thanks this. -
I don't have any photos handy of the inside of the hood of my truck. Mine had the underside of the fenders undercoated so they're black. This pic from Google should give you a bit of an idea of what an old W900A hood looks like:

A CAT reman would definitely be yellow. My old man had a late 70s W900A with a yellow CAT. It had a drop in reman at some point prior to him purchasing it.

I'd go with flat black under the hood.

Here's a snap together K100 I built years ago in the classic Werner paint scheme.

When mixing red and yellow to make orange, start with yellow and add red. Otherwise you run out of yellow before you get to orange. Should have asked my 1st grade teacher of a wife.650cat425 Thanks this.
