1990 11.1L Detroit questions

    Looking at a 1990 Freightliner Cabover with 767k on the clock, it’s turns over but won’t start, will run on ether tho been sitting awhile but has been indoors most of the time and is in really good shape. Now keep in mind I haven’t seen it in person yet, guy selling it seems knowledgeable about it so I’m going by what I’ve been told and what I can see in photos.

    Has a new fuel pump and four new batteries still no fire. What would be your plan of attack to make her go again? I’m not a diesel mechanic but I’m guessing it’s going to be a collapsed fuel line or maybe a lift pump. If it was bad or contaminated fuel I would guess it would at least try to start or maybe run poorly for a short time. Is this truck new enough to have an ECM or brains of any kind or is it mechanical still? If it has a computer then I guess I would start there alternatively.

    What do you guys think and what is your General opinion of the 11.1L?

    Series 60 is electronic. Chances are its probably lost its fuel prime. Pretty common if they've been sitting a while for them to do that. I'd check ECM power wires and fuses in the battery box too.

    Couple questions following this up:

    Does this motor have a built in primer pump? And would it reasonable to assume that the ECM is likely good since it will run on ether? I agree checking wires and fuses is a must but i wanted to ask.

    I don't believe they have a primer pump. Just the mechanical pump that supplies fuel to the injectors.

    Ether is simply an outside fuel source. It has nothing to do with the electronic side of the engine.

    Run the feed line into a jug with fresh diesel that way you’ll know if your chasing the right problem .AS stated by AModelCat the ecm fuse at the battery was a common issue with the early series 60 .

    I'm betting it sat the batteries died, they tried boosting it to no avail so decided to put new ones on it. That's when the problem occurred, your gonna have a wire on the wrong side of the batteries. Seen it too many times to count on those old Detroits after they have sat.

    They need to make sure the ECM is functioning before going any farther......and quit spraying starter fluid in it.


    Lines don't collapse just sitting. Gear pumps dont go bad just sitting.

    I have to agree with @wore out . Do you have a stop engine light, or check engine light? If not, your ecm is not powered up.

    Probably has two fuel filters, get new ones. Fill them up and install. Make a jumper line from primary and stick it in a clean can of new diesel.

    Anything parked I would pull intake pipe off of intake. Look for mice nests stopping air flow. I have seen them plugged solid. If you need to give it any type of starting aid. Try wd40. It will help brake up the rust if any on cylinder walls.

    WD40 doesn't damage the cylinder walls like ether either.
