I felt so bad for this guy in a car that passed me today. Dude was driving a brand new Maserati, still had a temp tag, and it apparently already has a broken speedometer and turn signals.

Fuel v. P&D? Fuel, no questions asked. V. Linehaul? Linehaul.

Started the night off with a flat at my service center... later on I almost hit a buck. Then saw a pretty sweet car fire parked on the scale house on ramp. Didn’t even touch a forklift. All in all a good night.

When you say LA, based on your profile photo, I'm inclined to think Los Angeles? If so, I'd give it thought as my understanding of CA labor laws tells me that the nonsense of load pay doesn't exist and people get paid hourly. If you mean Louisiana, stay away from load pay carriers lol.

It isn't that the load pay carriers are bad, but with fuel, why bother to incentivize yourself to cut corners past a safe level of efficiency. Of the handful of cross drop stories I've read about in recent news articles (made the news because hundreds of customers had to file insurance claims for vehicle repairs) around here, 100% of them were load based pay carriers.

In my fuel hauling time, I don't think I ever had a day under 11 hours. Which was fine as I was paid hourly, and I took my time but not to the point of milking it.

Fuel hauling is almost completely wonderful, and as far as I was concerned, the hardest parts of my day only consisted of backing the trailer to a prime position for the drop valves, or having to back on to the street because I had to nose in to get the trailer in range of the drop valves. Load yourself, unload yourself. No waiting for receivers. The gas station is generally happy to see the gas delivery driver. Tanks are baffled so surge is nowhere near what it would be if hauling milk or acid.

My only real downsides that I experienced hauling fuel were having to wear fire retardant clothing in crummy weather; jumpsuits that turned you into a walking convection oven, or jumpsuits that made your already restricted movements from multiple clothing layers harder in frigid weather.

Lots of people think a full gas tanker is dangerous, but it's the empty ones full of vapors that are the REAL dangers.

I'd be out of LTL for good and ride off into the sunset for the next 30 years hauling fuel if the carriers around me didn't have $700+/month insurance premiums.

Most places will want you to work overnights and/or weekends. The life of the typical fuel hauler sucks with regard to his work schedule. It's difficult to find a day time gig that has any semblance of m-f, at least in my experience.
