You're sort of asking two questions in one. The way you've worded it, it looks to me like the answer is no because when the 14 gets extended by the 3 hours is a factor. You have to complete the minimum split break requirement (a total of 10 hours in two separate breaks) before any adding of time back to your 14 can occur. Thus, no, the 14 isn't extended by 3 as soon as those 3 are over. It'll be extended by 10 as soon as you've completed the 7 in the next break. I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

I guess I'm confused over it

What I don't get is why do they tell you that it extends the 14 hours?

To me what you're saying sounds like the old rule.

I don't know but I really would like to thoroughly understand it because with what I do, I do use the split sleeper at times.

I see what you're saying. Under the old rule, once you finished the 8+ break (used to be 8), the beginning of your work shift moves up to when you came off the 2+ break, so that 2+ break is no longer counting against your 14.

So I think that when they say the 14 can now be extended, they're only talking about the scenario where you take the 7+ break first, then the 3+ break. It used to be that when you did an 8-hour break, your 14 kept ticking down when you took your 2-hour break.

This was a huge drawback because you only have 3 hours to play with before your 14 starts cutting into your 11, and 2 of those got eaten up by the second break when you did a split. Under the new rule, the "clock stops" for the short break, so you retain the 3-hour cushion protecting your 11.

I spent the week practicing the 7-3-7.
And I don't know if its age or my bronchitis. But I just can't hang with that.
For me, this was pretty tough. But I did it all week long. I've decided to stay with the 8-2-8.
For me and my body my mental awareness this works best.
I really do like the not having to break until after 8 hours of driving. My blatter almost made it 6.5 hours.
As far as the three hours stopping the clock. It was either Monday or Tuesday I took a 3.25 hour nap at the shipper
( bronchitis made it hard to focus during hi time in ohio) When I got back to work I was quite upset I had so much day left. Thou I don't know when it stopped but it definitely did.

I've used the 8/2 sporadically in the past, normally after not sleeping well on the previous break and growing tired early on the next shift.
    It worked... EASY.

    HOWEVER.
Since the 9/29 changes went into effect I tried to use it the other day and it did NOT work... and I can't figure out why.

Had to meet a relay in Boise, but my shift ended in Snowville, UT. , where I took a 10.
I was 3.5hrs from Boise and had to go meet him early, but my load to pick up in Boise wasn't until 1400-1600, so I had to take another 10 and I was not tired.
    I barely slept at all.

Got it picked up after the 10 with a fresh 11/14 and headed east.
Made it into Wyoming with an hour left on my 8.. getting tired.
    So I stopped.
I had 4hrs driving remaining, and 5.5 on my 14.

I slept 7hrs and woke up WIDE AWAKE.
Checked and it didn't give me my 4 or 5.5 back
So I waited til the 8hr mark in the sleeper.
It still didn't give it to me.
    ALL IN THE SB.

It made me take the whole 10 before it reset.
    I don't understand.

Well, since you brought up nightmares.......
In my dream ,I am backing down a curvy two-lane mountain road at night. I am only going about 10-15 mph. I am applying the brakes, but it just will not come to a stop !!
Why am I backing down a mountain road?
I don't know. I've never needed to in real life.
I've had this dream about 5 times.

I got out of the military 28 years ago. I finally went to the VA Hospital and got a medical card. The hospital is two miles from my house. They asked me if I would like to see a psychiatrist.
I am sure it must be a standard question they ask everyone. Because I KNOW I am PERFECTLY SANE !!!!!!!
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ME !!!!!

Many ELD programs dont apparently dont shiw that you have time available when doing a split berth (mine is that way). You have to know what is legal and what is not... Mine will show it as legal AFTER you have done it, but not before you do it... Even if it is legal to do it.
