Is it really though? That’s what I’m saying, many local drivers on here have found great companies where they make really great money. Look at how many miles and hours some of us are putting in, and then look at the pay for their company. $1500+ is common and $1800+ is attainable on the linehaul side. @KaoMinerva made great money running extra board for Estes out of Memphis. There are some poor paying local jobs out there, but it’s not accurate to say “most local jobs aren’t paying.”

I feel like we went over this with you at some point a long time ago. @88 Alpha posted some great advice above. I don’t know where you got your year of experience, but it might not be enough if even the food and beverage companies won’t touch you.

 

If money is what you're after, you can't go wrong with LTL. Old dominion, Estes, Whatever... It's a good investment. I worked 3 days last week and it doesn't matter because I've saved up so much money running 3500+miles a week during the summer.

 

When I say most local jobs, it ain't limited to LTL or P&D. In reality, those are the only ones that pay worth a crap. It's only so many of those to go around. You have food service, beverages, local gigs with big companies, other vendors etc. I worked for 7up/Snapple several years ago. The money wasnt bad considering I was in my bed every night. Those jobs are dependent on the route your get, mine wasnt the highest paying by a long shot. It was enough to make a living. I'm doing better with OTR than when I had that job. I actually like OTR better to be honest. The local drivers that have done well on TTR are just a fraction, albeit a small one, that make big money and can be home every night. There are so many factors that figure into it. Not only that, many LTL gigs will take a little time for a driver to get to that point. Some people are fortunate to get a good gig right off and others, as in OP's case have to pay some dues. The faster he just accepts he has to do what he has to do, the faster he can get the ball rolling to his ideal job and lifestyle.

 

Check into NFI as well see what they got. They have flat rate pay as well I live in Virginia and get paid $275 or $300 helping other NFI-G&P accounts. Today was a Lowe’s load it paid me $275 for a 4 1/2 hour day, Drop N Hook store to DC back to store.

 

Foodservice pays pretty good too, I was making over $26/hr at US Foods fresh out of CDL school. Beverage side can be hit and miss, I’ve seen sub $20/hr offers and others that are comparable to foodservice. I have friends who deliver groceries and others who work for bakeries moving bread around, all making great money. Now that is the limit of my direct knowledge about local pay, but it represents a not insignificant portion of the industry.

Normally I’d also disagree about the whole “paying your dues” nonsense, but the OP is definitely having a hard enough time finding work that it might be something to consider in this instance. A year of steady CDL-A work, no matter what it is, will do a lot for getting interviews with local gigs.

 

No disagreement totally. Like I said l, some do make great money. It all depends on location, and other factors. It ain't going to be a huge abundance of those positions. That's why it helps to make yourself as qualified as possible. OP has limited experience, and apparently not the best luck. It appears he may have to take the long hard road. Others just get lucky I guess. Those who are fortunate to get a good paying local job, we can't really use those as an example to help these newbies because each individual path is different.
