Your insight is a big help to me. I'm so glad you found a career that is so fulfilling, and thank you for wishing me well.

It helps to know you have a similar background to me and you're succeeding in this field, and didn't let anything stop you.

Maybe that lady can show you how she maneuvers the truck to fit that dock? If she's anything like you all, I'm sure she'd be glad to help!

Trucking isn't all that hard of a job... Especially if you dont have a spouse and children waiting at home. Not that its impossible to have those and make a career in this industry.

Learning to drive a truck both forward and backward is just a matter of paying attention, asking questions, practice, and patience.

As for the schooling, I'm afraid I'm not much help... I'm pretty much a "self taught" trucker, never have done any official schooling or training pertaining to trucks. I kinda grew up around trucks of various types & sizes, and just picked it up because I WANTED to learn.

Trucks are much easier to drive these days than those of bye-gone years. Most companies not only arrange for mechanical repairs, but dont even allow drivers to fix things on the truck... So you got nothing to worry about there. If you can look at something and see if it is broken or not, that is about all you need to know.

Backing up seems to be a skill that many struggle with... But thats ok. Even the best of us have those days when we couldnt hit the side of a barn if it was chasing the trailer.

Go for it! You'll do just fine.

School or company will only teach you enough to get the license. Then a trainer will take you on the road.
The more you learn before you get in the truck the better, pre trip, test questions.
Then you can concentrate on the driving.
Once you are on the road for a while the truck will no longer seem big.

My last regular customer with Averitt Express was in Muscle Shoals, AL. The employees there were about 50/50 split between Auburn & Alabama fans. Some of them even claimed both teams played college football. I almost believed them.

The 22 day schools have a benefit; more road time.
One company has only one week in class and the rest is on the road with an experienced driver.
Pushing a pencil in a classroom for more than a week is a waste of time. Students should be on the yard practicing backing and on the road experiencing traffic.

    Here's Wilson Logistics:
    On-boarding
We pay for a bus ticket over to our terminal in either Missoula, MT or Springfield, MO. If you prefer to fly or drive, we can reimburse you up to the amount of the bus ticket we would originally purchase (whichever is the lesser of the two). You will be at our terminal for about a week before we get you on the road with a trainer. During this time, we cover the cost of your hotel, breakfast, and lunch.
