I just started a new job driving a garbage truck with a local company. I had been OTR for ten years and always planned on going local eventually so I finally had the opportunity to get off the road.
The job was listed as day rate at $800/wk. However, during the interview, the division manager told me that they paid overtime. He said it wouldn't be time and a half but that we " would get paid something" and that it started after 40 hours in the week. Never having had a day rate job and not being familiar with how that works, I made the assumption that it would be straight pay. My first week was all orientation stuff and I worked 43 hours. My second week ( and this seems like it will be the norm) I worked 65 hours. I just got my pay check for the first week and they only paid me $9.00 /hr for the overtime. Is this normal???

At least you got something, farmers don’t have to, and won’t pay any overtime, they are exempt, I’ve worked all week be around 120 hours and for $4-500.
They still pay you % as a driver, and your not a farm worker, but since you work for a farmer, he can do that.
Just shuffle paperwork.
Oh, and did I mention farmers don’t pay state taxes on you?
End of year you’ll owe $1000- $1200 -
Move on to a company that values your time.TripleSix, tscottme, truckdriver31 and 1 other person Thank this. -
You still made $1025, and was home every night. $800/week plus $9/hour for 25 hours.
