A law proposing the ban of Jake Brakes on local streets in Haledon, New Jersey is expected to pass this week.
Steep hills that run throughout the north and west end of the borough and a concentrated area of truck traffic near a local quarry has made the brake noise an issue to local residents.
The Borough Council was scheduled to vote on the braking law Thursday night. Signs were already posted on two roads near the quarry to alert drivers of the pending ban.
If the law passes, drivers who are first-time violators would face a fine of $150 and up to 10 days in jail.

3- Exceptions.
The provisions of this section shall not apply to engine braking where necessary for the protection of persons and/or property which cannot be avoided by application of an alternative braking system. Noise caused by the application of engine compression brakes, otherwise known as engine-braking, which is effectively muffled or if the application is necessary for the health, safety and welfare of the community is exempt from the provisions of this section. Sounds created by emergency equipment for emergency purposes are also exempt.Tb0n3, bigguns, Dave_in_AZ and 1 other person Thank this. -
