Wait a minute. You're hauling broker freight off a load board and you think you aren't giving up a percentage? If any of those brokered loads you haul with your own numbers is a landstar load you are definitely paying LS percentage, just don't see it.
Landstar??

The conclusion is you haul frieght. Wether you lease on or haul your own. The rates to the truck are the same basically. Maybe crappy on the board. I don't know what they are today.
The difference would be how soon you want to get paid. Collecting your own could take up to 120 days. VS. Immediately or weekly.
Then there's the paperwork and fees and what not. Leasing is less paper.
So there's really no reason to gripe.
Different strokes for different folks is what it comes down to.stuckinthemud, exhausted379, flood and 2 others Thank this. -

I was pretty intent to lease on to one of the big guys, too. I thought it might provide access to higher paying loads and cheaper insurance.
That may still be true. I won't argue with that. However, all the fees and oversight weren't for me. I did the math and realized I could make more on my own. I am very self-motivated. I am able to work independently and have invested the time to learn the rules and regs of my industry. I file my paperwork efficiently, so it's not a huge ordeal or time waster for me. I can take time off to work on projects, then go hit it hard.
My insurance rates keep dropping each year. Insurance was the main reason I started looking to lease on. Now, my rates are low enough I don't need to worry about that anymore.
I don't like escrow accounts. I can manage my own money, thank you. Why would I let them make interest off my money?
I also like the freedom of using whichever logging device I want. Qualcomms are expensive and I don't particularly like the clunky device, operating system, or monthly fees.
For me, the freedom to operate as I see fit and deck out my truck as I want is the draw to being an O/O. I like making the rules and answering to myself. I like being able to say no.
I think leasing is a great option for people who may not want the hassles of making decisions and exercising self-discipline. It's also a great way to learn the ropes before fully setting out on your own.
As has been said many times on here, different strokes for different folks. To answer the OP, I honestly don't know if there's a difference between the two. Pick one and go with it. Give it some time and make an informed decision whether to stay at the current place, or move on. Or, maybe get your own numbers.
I've always thought of drivers as fitting in three catagories: Company, Lease, O/O. Each have their pros and cons.drivinhome, stuckinthemud, Cat sdp and 2 others Thank this. -

If you've seen what the forums post. There's good math there too.
Do you need a refresher course?
