First off... Seriously I never wish to own a truck. Nope. Nor do I want to run a small business or have my own authority or anything remotely like being an Owner Op.
But, you guys have probably seen, heard, or done enough to have some insight for my benefit.
I'm a company driver. I like that. I'm driving a leased penski truck. My company signed on when we had a quick need and it was financially prudent. That lease term will be up in a few months and my boss occasionally talks to me about things I don't really understand, like ....peterbuilt blah blah numbers more numbers blah blah kenworth yadda yadda... I don't know I don't care, I drive. Its a big truck. I put fuel in it. I inspect it. That's about the extent of it. They're expensive to buy, operate and repair. I don't want to own one.
All that being said...
Is is possibly to my advantage to provide my own truck, which I would hold the lease on, and run for a larger percentage of the loads? I know that there's a brother of the owner running on their insurance etc in a truck he owns and used to run under some big company. So I know there's lots of possible configuration of who pays for the truck, who holds insurance and DOT stuff.
Is what I'm describing even a thing?
Should I lease a truck...

You should stick where you are. If you decide to operate the truck yourself you'll need to be very involved in running your company which you explained you didn't want to do. Its not a guarantee you'll make more money as an owner operator at all, thats where good decisions and hard work come in. And even if you do get that right, luck can play rough tricks on you too. Stay where your happiest.

You spent most of the entire post saying you don’t want the responsibility of owning or even running a truck. Listen to yourself and just drive like you like to do.

Yes what you described is a thing. More often then not they are called never never plans. They seldom work out for the lessee.rachi, homeskillet, dunchues and 1 other person Thank this. -

Your words "Nor do I want to run a small business " it doesn't matter if you own a truck or lease/rent a truck you will be running a business. If you don't you will be broke. Driving the truck is the easy part if that is all you want to do then don't buy or lease one.
There is no avoiding the repair fiasco.
But it really seems you already decided you are going to do this because you are arguing with the advice being given to you pointing out the very obvious bad idea based off reasons you gave.
Anyway good luck.Black_Yeshua, 650cat425, Six9GS and 3 others Thank this. -

The short answer is no !

Since my boss managed to profit OK from a couple of leases then obviously a full service lease doesn't make the truck unprofitable, so i was just wondering if holding that financial responsibility as the driver would command enough compensation to make it worth researching.
My responses weren't to contradict only to clarify.650cat425 and singlescrewshaker Thank this.
