Cummins n14 camshaft replacement

Something like this. Made by Monaco tool in Oregon, might give them a call.

 

I've never done the camshaft on mine so I am kind of curious about this.

Can't you just replace the plug, wouldn't that be easier and less money?

 

You know I wasn't thinking about the engine being in the truck because I had my engine out on the floor when I was working on it.

I don't exactly remember but I think the flywheel housing itself may have to come off to get to that plug.

That makes sense you would need that tool or something similar.

 

I you knock the plug out the back have to pull the flywheel housing to put one back in.

 

It was quite common when in block cam engines were the standard, only the front six cam bearings were replaced and customer was given option for #7 and quoted the extra cost. How much wear is on the bearing?

 

When I worked in an engine shop they had a special tool for that. It fit in the bearing bore and had 3 lugs about a 1/4 inch wide. As the threaded rod was tightened into the tool the 3 lugs expanded behind the bearing. Then a large slide hammer on the other end pulled it out.
For a brand X engine I used a piece of flat bar aprox 3/8 by 1 1/2. Bolted two pieces of thin angle on the end at 90 degrees. Cut and ground until it fit snugly in the front cam bearings bore, which was the same OD as the rear. Unbolted it, installed the two angles in the rear bearing, slid the flat bar in from the front and bolted it in. Then attached a slide hammer. That was much faster than breaking a large Ag tractor in half.
