My cdl expires in the spring of next year, but in my tradition of taking care of these things as early as I’d like to (to minimize any effect of a hiccup that could happen if any) I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow to get my hazmat fingerprints that don’t change done for TSA.

I gave my dispatcher a heads up on Sunday that I took the latest possible appointment available to minimize any inconvenience to her schedule, which is 1640.

“Thanks for the heads up, what time do YOU want or need to get back to the yard?”

“1600-1615 should get me to the fingerprinting office on time.”

“Ok, we’ll see what I can do.”

Flash forward to today after I was finishing my second load and I received a text message from her.

“Tomorrow, head to Providence to load for the 0830 ferry and when you get back from the Vineyard go back to Providence to load for the Vineyard for Thursday. If you think throughout the day tomorrow that you won’t have time to load the second order and be on time for your appointment, that’s fine, just give me a heads up.”

This is one of many chapters of dialogue I’ve experienced with her, and aside from the outbound supervisor at my old FedEx Freight yard, she’s easily the most competent and pleasant dispatcher I’ve had running my day since I got my CDL.

@McUzi I was not aware that one can schedule an early appointment for (hazmat) fingerprints before your cdl expires.

MY CDL expired few months ago. Had redo hazmat test. The fingerprints were good until may 2023. They would not let me retake them. Said they will send letter a month before.

I almost didn't get to keep mine.

They told me some horse manure about needing a second appointment for the hazmat part, about which there was not one word to be found on the MD MVA's website.

As time goes on I get more and more convinced that they exist only to annoy CDL holders and make their lives as inconvenient as possible.

Met face to face with a 13 speed tractor today.

My work today consisted of loading multiple trucks for delivery on Monday. One of the trucks I was assigned to fill was a 13 speed. I’ve never used a 13 speed at all just 9 and 10 speeds, and I only know the 13s operation from previously watching YT videos on them.

Two trucks, equal specs, one with a 13 and one with a 10... the 13 pulled over the Bourne bridge to Cape Cod noticeably better and no where near as complicated as I expected them to be.

Man what I’d do to have one of these.

Really throws you off when you get a 7 speed without a shift pattern indicator on the knob. Looking for the high low switch like WTF.

Yea and YRC had some 7 speed Volvos that had the same knob as the 10 speeds. That’s what really screwed me up when I was a rookie.

That's wild. I bet breaking out of that shifting habit was a blast.

Hell, from when I got my CDL at TMC and moved on, it took me a while to break my habit of going from 5-7 in a 10 speed since I learned on a 9 speed.
