If you or somebody you know is from the Scranton PA area, chances are they've heard of these. I spent the day making 12 dozen Welsh cookies from my great grandmother's recipe. I usually get them made before Christmas but there just wasn't time this year. Unlike traditional cookies, they're fried on a griddle, and look like little pancakes. The little spots are black currants. Back in the UK they're known as griddle cakes. They're well known in the Scranton area because a lot of Welsh immigrated there to become coal miners, my great grandfather and grandfather included. They're full of butter, shortening and sugar and the miners packed them in their lunch pails for some quick calories to finish the shift. I can only make them once a year because we all put on weight after eating too many.

Black and red currants are very popular fruit shrubs in Central Europe. In my youth, as a kid I was earning my first money on picking those. We also made sweet wine from red currant. Sometimes I get nostalgic, so one day 3 years back or so I ordered three tiny little red currant seedlings on Amazon...they are my knee high now and I hope to see first fruits this summer.
I wanted black currants too but I could not found them...then I read somewhere that in some states they were banned for whatever reason.
    I got nostalgic now...I'll have a drink.

Too funny, one of my first jobs was picking red currants as well, but the first money I made as an entrepreneur was selling gooseberries from our bushes. Think I cleared a couple of hundred bucks, I thought I was a baller......

Yes, of course gooseberries. :) I forgot about those. I remember those bushes had thorns and we never could wait and ate those while still green and sour...
Maybe I should order a few of those seedlings too.
