Why Lease? Doesn’t Make Business Sense to Me.

Been doing lots of research on getting my own truck and making the transition from company driver to OO.

I would never in million years ever lease a truck because I want the lowest possible overhead. I’ve been looking around for a 2007 or older Freighliner with a Detroit series 60 12.7 that I’ll pay cash for a pay cash to get it load ready even it it means a rebuild and other stuff for $20k.

Leasing a truck running 2k miles a week can be like 50 cents + plus a mile.

What is the fascination of leasing and having a payment?

Leasing a truck with a payment is a "fascination"? How so?

And if you are only running 2k miles a week. This isn't the career for you.

Because with “used” you don’t know what you’re getting.....

Having leased you can budget around the lease price and know what you’re getting exactly. ( Now there’s a .01% chance you will have issue but statistically speaking you have a higher chance of behaving down time with used )

A lot of people that feel the need to go into business for themselves don’t have enough money to buy a truck. They also don’t need to get into business, but they still do and a lease is their only option. In my opinion it is a terrible option, but still an option.

Not necessarily true for me entering my 34th year trucking. A 2000 mile week for me is an awesome week with 8 short loads under my belt. More miles does not always mean more money.

An O/O doesn't necessarily have to run big miles to make money. He/she just has to get the best rate on all the runs. I think OP was making a reference to leasing as being a glorified company driver.

I’m in the the Philly PA market and short haul is pretty decent. For instance I signed up for a load board to research and even called some people to ask and there are loads going 50 - 55 miles paying $500 - $550 with like a 5 mile dead head.

That’s the type of work that once someone gets a routine can make really good money. If you found easy on and off direct freight like that you probably wouldn’t do anything else and definitely wouldn’t tell anyone how good it is.
