Fuel mileage one a Cat with 4.30 rears

    I have sort of been aprouched about pulled container to the port at 90k gross about 200 miles away. So I’ve been doing the fun of looking at truck paper and found a 2007 379 with 624 hp Cat 3406 with a 18 spd Eaton and 4.30 rear end ratio. I know in a Long hood Pete with 4.30s pulling that kind of weight the fuel mileage isn’t going to be great but is it going to get like 4s, 5s maybe. Just trying to get real world info so I can crunch some numbers to see if that would work or if I should look else where....thanks for the input

    4-5 is doable just keep the top speed down below 65.

    the old timers hauling heavy had 4.10 or 4.30.... rears

    I assume the truck has got 11R24.5 tall rubber?

    This a glider? The 3406 series was long discontinued by 2007.

    Its gonna be #### regardless. Aerodynamics of a brick plus 90k gross is not a winning combo for fuel mileage. Aerodynamics and weight play more of a factor in mileage than the engine IMO.

    Might be lucky to see it into 5's. More likely mid to high 4's. You'll be around 1700 RPM to do 70 mph on 24.5 rubber. 22.5 rubber you'll probably be at 1700 RPM to do 65 mph.

    Not sure about the tire size, it’s a listing on truck paper but if it had 22.5 on I’d probably switch them out for 24.5 eventually. It’s a 2007 with 420k on it so it’s pre emissions and low mileage for that age. The same dealer had a 2016 T880 with a ixs at 550hp and 3.70 ratio, it’s got a bit more miles on it and emission #### but it’s a bit more aerodynamic

    If it is actually a 3406 in it, its got no emissions on it. A 2007 will have emissions on it. It can go either way with the severity though as 2007 was a transition year. Could be ACERT only or it could possibly be an early SDP Cat with DPF. SDP = run away and very fast.

    The 07 w9 i drive has a c15. No dpf. Pulling 95k with 3.52 i get upper 4's. Mid 5 empty.

    Wouldn't pre emissions be 03ish?

    If it has tall rubber you'll be somewhere in the 1600-1700 range at 65 depending on the final OD ratio. I would expect mid 5s or so if your not a speed demon. Maybe even close to 6 if running flat and keep around 60-62

    The truck in my avatar has 4.42 on tall rubber running 1650 at 65. A little better on fuel at 11.9L compared to the cat. Its a steady 6.3-6.5 not too many flat spots along the I 81/80 corridor

    Speed limit is 70. Traffic only allows 60. Trucks only allow 55.
