It’ll cost you a little money, but if secure the truck, tell the manager of the truck stop about the immediate death in family.
Fly home.
Return later and bring them their truck, quit and have another job.

Call the office and ask for bereavement time off or accumulated holidays.
Let them know that you have the unit in a safe place.
Fly home.
Fly back after a time as per your agreement with the office. -
Call you company and tell them your flying/renting a car to go home and be back at a later date to take the truck back
OldeSkool Thanks this. -
If that don't work just unhook your eld and drive to the closest yard and drop it off there

Tell them you are going home. Do this in a text or email so you will have proof. Keeps written notes of any phone calls with them but try to use email, if you can. Let them know that you will leave the truck in a safe place, but you are going home and that it is not negotiable.
Edit: I just realized that you are in Florida and I'm sure you work for Indian River Down there, You should take the truck to your nearest terminal. Get someone in maybe the shop to sign that you are dropping the truck Tell them you are going home and will be back as soon as you can after everything gets settled. If they don't like it at least they can't say you abandoned the truck. And while you are home find a better company to work for.
I hope you went over your immediate bosses head and complained about this. You should and also call safety and ask them how safe it would be for you to drive all the way across the country. with your mind at home.Last edited: Jan 12, 2021

I called dispatch and told them I needed direct back to Nova Scotia, they tried but couldn't come up with anything quickly. So I bobtailed home. Im an owner op, I didnt expect to be paid, and it was my decision. I was shocked when they did pay me mty miles. Stuff like that keeps me here I guess.tarmadilo, TheLoadOut, stillwurkin and 6 others Thank this. -
