How long did Draftees serve in Vietnam? - Answers

I had some high school buddies that were impatient and didn't want to wait for their draft number to be called so they went to the draft board and volunteered to be drafted. This way, they left in a day or two.
They wanted to be drafted because that was a 'coming of age' and pathway to manhood. They looked at it as being as important as getting a drivers license at 16 yrs. old.
Another issue was, when applying for a job, one of the questions asked; "Have you been drafted yet?" If the answer was "no", then the company wouldn't hire you. The reason was, the companies didn't want to spend time and money training you for a job, just to have you leave after being drafted.Last edited: Jan 16, 2021
