Hazmat insurance for small operation

    My main customer is wanting me to haul small quantities of hazmat for them. We're talking LTL shipments of two 55 gal drums of cleaning solution at a time, or a 275 gallon IBC tank of ethanol. Not much quantity, just above the placard limits. All table 2 listed stuff. Radius of less than 150 miles.

    Is there anyone here with insurance experience that can point me in the right direction for hazmat coverage that can be tailored to this if possible. No way it'll pay if I have to pay full blown hazmat coverage.

    Why not give a shout to the insurance companies & see what they say. If knowing the way insurance companies think it's all about the worst case scenario. They brings money. I could be wrong. They would let you know what you are looking at. All the best to you

    I'm at a standstill with my current insurance company as they don't seem to be interested in writing the policy I'm looking for. Rather than contact every insurance company on the net I was hoping someone might have a good company they are dealing with.

    Dead issue now. I was basically told I needed to split my for hire trucks from my fleet,that includes trucks for my hardware and building materials business,, and form a new company with those trucks to be able to get the insurance I need. That simply isn't practical for the income this brings in, so I'll just proceed with my non-hazmat freight business and carry on.

    There are two levels of financial responsibility by the FMCSA depending on the classifications and size of load.. 1 million coverage and 5 million coverage. I fit squarely in the 1 million category. I cut my regular cargo rates in half by telling the underwriter what I typically haul (advantage of dedicated customers), so I was wondering if that same advantage might be out there somewhere for hazmat. Unfortunately the insurance company that does my cargo won't do hazmat.

    Next year I'll quote the whole thing out in one package and try and find a vendor that wants my business. I'm unique in that I'm insuring a retail location, a heavy equipment rental fleet, a repair shop, a small company fleet that hauls company stuff, company small vehicles and two trucks that do company stuff and for hire loads. It's a mess to insure.

    That’s originally why I switched from Progressive to Midwest Family. They allowed haz in niche areas and circumstances like you require for basically little extra money. A few yrs later I needed much more broad coverage and is why I then moved on to Great West.

    If it’s over 1000 lbs you gotta placard it and you’ll need tanker endorsement as well. Have you thought about brokering it out or they are wanting to add it to existing trucks?

    But yeah you only need 1m. If you needed someone to really dive into your stuff, I have an excellent agent. Are you actually in Alaska? I noticed it says AKDoug.

    Btw I switched agents between Midwest and Great west. My previous agent was telling me how impossible stuff was and I realized this guy basically just doesn’t understand it so I need someone who does.

    Yes, I'm actually in Alaska. No need to broker it out, I just let my dedicated customer deal with hiring someone to move their hazmat stuff noted in my original post. The freight forwarder that brings the stuff up by ship to Alaska can move to the customer as they are fully insured for it. The loss of revenue for me is pretty small. We never have been requested to move more than two IBC totes at a time so I'd be under the 1000 gallons requiring the tanker endorsement. I actually still have my tanker endorsement on my license, but let the hazmat portion lapse.
    I appreciate the offer for the agent. At this point the customer and I have agreed to not worry about it this year. I may reach out to you next year if my current agent can't put together a package for me by then.
