Yeah I honestly didn't know which way was legal. I always thought staying in the road would be "impeding trafic" which I think is a ticket? I do stay in the road like you said.

you are overthinking it. you will never be questioned by law enforcement for stopping at rr tracks. you can't "impede traffic" when you are federally required to stop.

That could be asking for trouble though on a highway.

If you stop in the turn lane, it might not be close enough and could earn you a ticket. But if you stop in the middle of the intersection, you could obviously get hit by cross traffic. This is one of those things where you really should ask your safety department what they want you to do. And get it in writing. I asked my dispatcher about it at one point last year and was told to go a different route...

The last HM load I hauled, i crossed some tracks in Grand Forks on Hwy 2 and did a full stop. Turns out I had a police officer behind me and he hit his yellow lights when I did that. There is no stopping lane or turn lane to perform the stopping maneuver.

i agree 100%. however, i didn't write the laws and the highway crossings around here are exempt.

This is one I encounter twice a day every day, with a 55 mph speed limit and only a stop sign for the side street. I turn on the 4-ways before slowing down, move over to the turn lane, and stop at the tracks. All the fuel haulers and bus drivers do it the same way.

It's not common, but highway railroad crossings are still around. It's not an ideal situation, but I do stop at them (assuming I remember that I am placarded). Buses are all in the same boat as us. It's kinda nerve wracking now that everyone is on their phones and not paying attention to the flow of traffic

    misterG and Texas_hwy_287 Thank this.

so you then merge back into 55+ mph traffic from the turn lane?

Picked up a bit of snow this week. I never realized how much I disliked it until I started driving through it.
