Just called my recruiter back today. Apparently Swift academy in AZ is only taking AZ students now.

You are lucky that you got a call back at least. I paid to go through truck school out of pocket because I had a pre-hire through swift. I wouldn't have went through school without a pre-hire. Recruiter with Swift was Abraham Ornelas. I have called him numerous times while in school and since I've graduated. He has never returned a single phone call. I'm out $3,300. Turned in applications with 6 other national companies, nothing back. Have to look for other line of work now or try and get my old job back if possible.

No, went through school in Las Vegas, NV.

You went through a Swift school in Las Vegas, NV? -
No, it's a trucking school(that Swift hires from) independent school.
-
*nods* I see. Then it was your independent school that's screwed you not Swift. I was curious.....because I've not heard of Swift not hiring a student out of their own school unless the student didn't graduate. Thanks for your time and I hope you get something soon.

All Pre-hires are subjective, so a pre-hire is not a guarantee of a job. For example. a company gives a student a pre-hire, but the student peforms poorly at school, the company is not going to hire them. Also, the schools are a business in an of themselves, they make money by having students, not by ther students getting jobs. So the requirments to get accepted to school are easier than the requirements to get hired by a lot of the companies. For example, one could get accepted to go to school even if they have a speeding ticket for say15mph over, but the company won't hire you because you have a ticket for 15mph over.
I do have to agree you can't give up that easy unless there is something like a bad MVR that will prevent you from getting hired, but even then, I wouldn't give up.
Also, don't just apply online, it is better to get a hardcopy of the application, fill it, write a cover letter or something explaining any tickets, gaps in work history, or whatever, and if possible, turn it in in person, otherwise send it in, then follow up.
Then keep applying. I was turned down by a comapny for a pre-hire, then again, when I applied during school, once more after school, then got hired two weeks later when I drove down there and handed in my 4th application. This company says it keeps applications for 6 months, but I applied 4 times in a 3 month period.
When you apply in person, you are a person, and the safety director can ask you questions and get your answers, it is easier for them to make a decision. I am sure the fact that I drove there helped, it showed I was commited. I drove up on Sunday, stayed in a motel, and was there early Monday morning. I was packed and ready to go if hired, and they put me right into orientation that day and reimbursed me for my gas and the motel.Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
Thank you. I keep telling people that the independent schools aren't always the best way to go. They don't care about the student any more than a company school does.
