If this question has been asked, apologies. I did search first but couldn't find an answer to my specific issue.

We have our IFTA license as of Feb 1st.

If I didn't select all the US states on my IFTA application, will that be an issue if we decide to run in those (maybe 5 or 6)?

If so, is there a way to add them to the license? Do I need to re-apply? Or will they be added automatically when I do my quarterly reports with those states/miles/gallons, etc. reported?

    Thanks!

You will probably get scaled and they will possibly ticket you and have you pay for a trip permit. If you are traveling there you might as well include it on your IFTA app other than the following states...
I can tell you Oklahoma doesn’t mess around with the trip permits. I doubt other states will let it slide either.

If you will travel in the following states you will need to apply individually with them also.

Oregon, New Mexico, Kentucky, New York

Kentucky was the easiest and you get you KYU number fast.

New Mexico was a bit confusing for me as was New York but I called OOIDA and they helped me out there. I will travel to NM for sure maybe never for NY. But it is cheap.
When you do your quarterly IFTA you will also need to log in and do Your fuel taxes for these three places as well. It is pretty easy. If you haven’t been through them you owe $0 if you have put the miles and it will be calculated.

Oregon seems to be in a class of its own. I choose not to apply there as I believe you can go through there 12 or 15 times a year without having to file a bond with them (which I believe is $2k) however if you do go there you must make arrangements or you will be fined at the port of entry I am told. I’ll go there someday just to do it as it is beautiful but I definitely won’t go often as open deck freight doesn’t seem to be strong.
So I have no help for you as far as Oregon goes. Maybe one of the guys running through there once in awhile will chime in.

Any other states I am missing y’all?

Zero reason not to choose all States IMO....your apportioned plate is roughly the same money every year...IFTA just determines how that money is split up between the states.

The first year I chose all states (they said I had no choice actually) knowing I would never see West of the Mississippi......I saw my receipt for my plate and I gave all of those states money the first year.....but then moving forward my IFTA filings insure that only the proper states divide my apportioned plate fees.

You can’t buy a permit at the scales/port of entry either in OK,
know a guy who tried and ended up with a high dollar fine.
Missouri and Mississippi can be bought at scales, don’t pass the pad, pull over and stop before it or you’ll still get a ticket for “running the scales”

You can when they make you lolol. That was what I was getting at. Get it before you go in or they will make you buy one with a ticket in hand before you leave the scale.

IFTA is good in all participating states, there is no selecting. IRP used be the states you select, but changed to all participating states a few years ago.

fortycalglock is correct. IFTA is good for all states but your registration would be only be good for the states you checked off. When it comes time to do IFTA at end of quarter you will just file your miles and gallons for each state that you ran. I know NC is all online to file quarterly and it formulates either what you owe or if you are due a refund for that quarter.
Just make sure to set up accounts for KY,NM,NY and OR if you are running those states and file quarterly with them as well.
