I have a 2012 volvo with d13 and it is having long/hard starts. If I prime it will start right up. Shut it off for a couple of minutes and it loses prime. The colder it is the worse it is. Changed fuel filters last fall and the problem went away for a day then came right back. How do you check for air could be getting in ? I've read in other post it could be the filter housing, How do you check the filter housing for leaks? Thanks.

Could be injectors and cups. Does it shudder when you're on the jakes?

No usually runs fine once you get it started. I've read about lots of problems with the cups and injectors , but this seems to get really bad when it's colder out even when the motor is still pretty warm

    Injector cups without question.

    Is there
Any way to check this without pulling them ? seems like there are lots of threads about this and some of the time cups and injector don't fix the problem. Only use this truck about 3000 miles per year. Thanks

Not sure about that, but I have driven trucks with this exact issue and that’s what fixed it.

Look at the return line inside the passenger tank. If you have air bubbles coming out while the engine is running then it is likely the injectors. Helps to see the (if air is in the system) if you put it in a high rev.

If not injectors/cups it may also be a leakjng check valve.

They have updated stainless steel cups for not much more than the crappy standard cups

Diagnosing this is a pain in the behind as you can see and i can see why techs start with the most common. In my opinion, before getting into cups look over your fuel lines very carefully, your looking for things like were zip ties hold the lines together, line rubbing and chaffing etc Seeing as how its bleeding down so fast it may be the fuel overpressure valve at the end of the head and for what it costs to replace its probably just worth doing it first and foremost.

The next cheapest part in line will be the fuel filter housing, that one i'm still trying to figure out if the check valve is the same one as the one that hold the fuel from spewing out when changing filter or not.....if it is then it would be easy to verify but i cannot confirm.

Last resort is obviously injector cups or injectors themselves and as far as i can see when your into it, you're into it as there is no "looks good, put it back".

Are you doing the work yourself or are looking to pay to have it done?
