I've never seen one out in the wild, I've only seen two and they were both on junk trucks in a yard, and they were both Fords I think one was a two-story falcon and the other was an N so they were like early 1960s vintage

I had the shop manager at Jersey Shore Peterbilt tell me that. I asked him "why then, does it not matter which wheel you hang in the air, it's spinning?"

Then you have people saying wind chill lowers inanimate object temp below ambient.

This conversation is about ready to go into the world of magic magnet motors, it runs on water Stan Meyers, and how it's perfectly okay for the Tesla semi to weigh over 30000 lb because you're saved so much you can just drive around loads meant for a hotshot

There was also a rare weird belt drive that was developed by Sterling in the 50’s that they used before White bought them out. The prop shaft went passed the front diff to the rear diff at a right angle on the top of the boogie like mack but offset to the side and the belt ran the fronts which were a straight axle. The belt was inboard the tires. The brake drums were extendend inward with the pully spot on them. Kinda like a tractor flywheel to run a belt.
They said it was better than the belt between the duals because it was less likely to get damaged or stuck from stuff getting in between tires or a blow out.
White quickly killed it because they were standardizing everything to Rockwell hypoid like Pete and the other west coasters were at the time.

I saw one in a salvage yard once on a complete ‘51 or ‘52 and I and 3 others fought like hell to save it but the scrap yard was hell bent on shredding it to mulch. Sad.

Yeah I've seen some crazy setups over the years, quite a few chain drives, I can even remember seeing chain drives in somewhat limited service back in the day, but I've never seen anything running a belt drive other than parked in somebody's yard along with the other junk trucks.

I don't think I've ever even talked to anyone who ran a belt drive to tell me how well they worked. I can't imagine they work very well.

When planetary hubs came out they took over the market for really heavy spec stuff. The really heavy spec stuff was really the last place that the chain drives were used.

Before the planetary axles the idea of having a drive axle inside of the axle tube was kind of limited because they could only carry so much torque between the differential and the wheel.

The the planetary hubs put the final reduction out at the wheel so the torque on the axle shafts was cut down significantly
