Traffic should not have to stop to allow a merge... That is how a zipper merge is supposed to work, no one ever comes to a complete stop. But as we have all seen, when everyone races up the ending lane it only causes BOTH lanes to do the stop and go crap.
I would be perfectly happy with the zipper if when losing a lane the flow of traffic never slowed to more than 10 mph below the limit of the construction zone. But yet again, we all know that when coming into a 45 mph one lane construction zone in traffic you will be coming nearly to a stop repeatedly until you are passed the point where you loose a lane. However, when everyone lines out in a single lane well ahead of the ending lane traffic always flows smoother and faster... I will block the ending lane when I can raise someone on the CB to let me in at the merge point.
Indiana adopts "use all lanes to merge point" this construction season

Yeah it's kind of interesting how once somebody blocks all of the idiots trying to pass instead of merge and magically the flow starts moving again because they merge when they already should have.

Do 2 trucks still purposely block both lanes in 1st gear in a backup, so traffic thins out? Saw some bold 4 wheelers do some crazy things to get around them.

Zipper merge takes longer overall. Everyone pushes to the front and traffic stops. Using the extra space (lane) does nothing. Everyone will slow down to a crawl no matter what. This is not a capacity issue. The earlier everyone gets into the 1 travel lane, the quicker everyone gets thru.
Zipper merge is nothing more than an excuse for everyone to push to the front.
I'd rather crawl at 10 mph for 30 minutes than stop and start repeatedly for 30 minutes or longer. -
