I’m sorry to the haters but I’m making more money then I have in my whole life. Hell, I may sell out and retire. Why not? A local big company called yesterday wanting to buy me out.

Should I stay or should I go? My wife, son, and I having been building our dream home since Sept of last year. Sometimes the daily grind of problems is a pretty big burden. However, what the hell would I do then?

Standard Oil wants to buy you out?
I am afraid that this whole small carrier transportation business may slowly retire like the ferry business on Hudson river. Systematically, taken apart by mega carriers and the cheap contract labor. The rest will be done by the inevitable cut throat competition. I just hope that there will be still room for me for at least another decade and a half.

@Midwest Trucker you are not 65, are you? Only those over 60 want to sell...;)
Fleet and Brokerage is a powerful combination and it seems that whatever you have done so far was done well and correct. You are young and flexible, you can adapt and adjust, too.

Oh I’m sure guys like you and I will be just fine. Trucking has been going on for 100+ years. Not gonna stop anytime soon even for little guys like us.

It was flattering for me is all. The company has around 100 trucks and a brokerage. To be a little guy and be noticed is nice.

I have about (removed) in equipment and owe about (removed). Put profit on top of that for a few years it just got me thinkin! If anything it makes me want to work harder.

Sorry for the edit, probably shared too much.

Sell it, finish the house, enjoy some time off. In the next downturn buy equipment cheap from repo yards and start all over. Will not take long to get back where you are at now, since you are not selling the knowledge and experience

Do it, and then plot and scheme until the day that your noncompete expires and open up shop and make it work all over again.

    Bottom line?

Buy low, sell high. If they are offering money based on current HIGH valuations, sell. Secure your family’s financial future, permanently

There will be a downturn, and with some bad luck like a health episode, it could take you down.

If the money is right, take it, invest it, decompress for a while, and then start something else. Guys like you aren’t defined by their jobs, they are defined by their ability to make stuff happen.

Once someone says “ but then what would I do?”, it signals to me that they see themselves as a worker bee first, and only then husband and father, and so on down the line. I think family should come first, and work second.

Knowing when it's time to get out is a personal thing. Our company is over fifty years old and I've been here, first as a driver, then a dispatcher, then a minority owner, then a majority owner for about thirty years. It's a hard decision to make but with the business climate in California and the way things are headed I believe it's time to go.

We're in the process of dismantling our little company and we've been planning all the hows and whys for over a year now.
I think the main consideration is age. The other two owners and myself are all in our seventies and, quite frankly, we've made our money and want some time to relax. Couple that with the fact that ten out of our twenty five drivers will be retiring by June and they'd be almost impossible to replace. We've run out of old timers and the new drivers I see and hear don't impress me much.
We wanted to be fair with the employees. If any of them wanted to buy their truck we'd make them a good deal and act as the banker if necessary. A few of the younger guys did that. The fuel tankers were sold to our main customer and the drivers went with them. Same with the pneumatics.
Our chief mechanic and his son will be leasing the shop, yard, and office building.
Most of the construction and logging equipment was sold to a couple of our competitors. I'm keeping a few water trucks and dozers, mainly for fire season, but other than that I'll be all done by the first of June.
I just found out that two of the three office ladies (the ones that really run this place) will be hanging it up in June also. LOL...That does it. This place can't function without them.

I appreciate all of the nice comments and insight guys. It means a lot.

I kinda laughed off the idea yesterday but I’m actually giving it some real thought right now. Sort of surprising myself tbh.
