I started this on the "Experienced Truckers' Advice" forum because I believe you guys would have the most realistic input.

Now ... granted, this is maybe a dumb and valueless topic, but could be kind of fun. But I overheard a couple drivers sort of ribbing each other as to why each of them were the better driver, and why they claimed to be. At that time, it was fun listening to those guys, but later, I got to thinking more deeply about the whole thing.

Let's say that Trump was going to choose, the best truck driver of 2020. He put all his best advisors together to determine how to make the most data-backed, fact-based decision. What would be the variables? In other words, what would make a driver the best?

And I'll throw this out there too. In reality, I think the advisors would likely determine that awarding such a thing would have to be done based on driver "type." Because it would probably be impossible to say that 1 particular driver was the best, because some of the variables that come into play to choose, "the best" may be misguided or hold no bearing for different types of drivers. For example, one of the variables may be, which driver drove more miles for the year? Well, this factor may be more biased to a company drop & hook driver, compared to an O/O who may have the ability to filter out loads he doesn't want to take, compared to a local driver who may make several stops a day. Know what I mean Vern?

So for the sake of this discussion, let's say we're only talking about OTR, long haul type drivers for now. What would be those particular variables? And NO, I wasn't the best driver of 2020! :D

A brand new wardrobe of Adidas track suits and an assorted array of color coordinating flip flops would set you up ahead of the crowd.

Someone who knows how to manage the log book and work it to every minute , without doing anything illegal... someone who aint afraid to run in bad weather, but knows when to shut it down .... Someone who aint afraid to chain up when its required... someone who dont need their hand held by dispatch ... someone who knows how to take initiative , think for themselves and shows respect and courtesy to his customers...

He can do any load, legal or illegal,
He can drive day or night, sometimes both
In the same day if he has too,

He can sleep day or night,
He can drive in all types of weather,
He can go anywhere in the country, at any
    Time of the year,

He needs nothing from a dispatcher but a
    Pick up and delivery time,
    He doesn't do check calls,
    He does his own routing,

He doesn't talk to hardly anybody,
He already heard all the bull,
He turned his CB off a long time ago,

He never hangs around the terminals or yards,
You never hear from him unless it's a problem
    He can't solve himself,

He solves all problems with shippers, receivers,
Repair shops himself. It's just faster.
Only calling the company as a last resort and
    To pay the bill,

Never tells the company anything more
    Than they need to know.
They only screw things up and waste time.

He doesn't threaten to quit after a couple
Of slow weeks, he's knows that's how it goes,
He knows all the tricks dispatchers use,
So don't bother lying to him.
    He's already seen it all.

He sits in the right lane and lets the supertruckers
And 4- wheelers go, he's done fighting the traffic,
And he's got plenty of time to get where he's going
Because he planned his trip well ahead of time.

I could go on and on. But that's a start.

What makes a trucker the best trucker is staying out of the left lane if you are in a governed truck.

The best drivers always drive a Peterbilt.
Can't backup or don't know logging, it's ok, as long as you have a Peterbilt.

The Best Trucker is the one who doesn't have to use ComData to eat after three days off in Vegas.
