I've been a gearhead since I was about three or four (there are even pictures to prove it... somewhere :)), but we're in a new age. I won't go quite as far as saying the "enthusiast" community has no one else to blame but themselves, but they sure do own a huge piece of it; rolling coal, burning tires, street racing, roaring through neighbourhoods and campgrounds, destroying off-road areas... Enviro-weenies have the ears of the regulators, and they don't like us. Now, I'm far from being a boy scout tree hugger, but I learned a long time ago to behave in public... mostly.

And you know what, I like clean air and water and quiet time too.

Sadly anything that alters the emissions parameters(chips, exhaust,ECUs,etc)the EPA is cracking down on. And it’s not the only thing they’ve been going after. Remember more recently how they’re going after Fitzgerald and their glider business?

At one time the plan GM had for the Corvair was to make it a mid-engine sporty car, Had they not chickened out when that idiot Ralph Nadar started gunning for the Corvair, it would have been challenging the Corvette for top dog. Some execs at Gm even thought the the mid-engine Corvair could replace the Vette altogether.

Nah, they already started by taking down a high profile online diesel modder. “Oh you wanna roll coal? Watch as we take you down harder than a crack smoking Congressman.”

No sorry, this does not sit well with me. For going on almost 30 years now manufacturers have been raking in the profits convincing people they need an SUV when they mostly need a wagon or sedan. Are there some people that go off road for business or pleasure? Sure but not Cathy the sales manager at Kohl’s, or 90% of the soccer mom crowd.

Dealers say, “oh people don’t buy sedans” yeah because you don’t bother marketing them. Then they complain they don’t sell it’s self perpetuating.

The other 800# gorilla in the room is the massive cheat VW got caught in.

So we have an industry profiting off of overly complicated vehicles that get 20% worse mileage than a comparable 2wd vehicle. (SUVs get a loophole as “trucks” which helps the corp in a bunch of ways.) and another company that outright planned to cheat.

And because of this a relatively small number of enthusiasts are getting the majority of the retribution.

I’m guessing one guy’s glass packed 68’ Cobra probably doesn’t pollute anywhere near as much as 100 Mindys getting a NEW Range Rover instead of a new Acura TSX.

March of 2020 was the last time I drove any of my vintage cars. Ever since I retired into the warehouse I would rotate the cars around regularly to and from work. Different one each day. Co worker would do the same with his 3. Gas prices too were perfect for it for at least two years with super being just under $2. After the covid deal hit and everyone started to get more and more angry out in public over the stupidest trivial things and road rage in our area increased. We stopped.

We still don’t feel the time is right to start again. And now super is almost $3.
People used to look at these cars as cool with smiles and thumbs up. Now they will probably get triggered into a green meanie rage at the sight of one.
