My Monday through Friday job is as an accountant. I’m getting my cdl through a weekend community college course in April, and am hoping to find a second job on the weekends driving. Does anyone have any advice on where to start? I’m in the KC area, and there are tons of trucking companies here so I’m sure there’s somebody that needs an extra driver.

Edit: 2 other questions- would hazmat and tanker endorsements be helpful?

I make 52,000 at my current job. What’s the likeliness of making more than that as a truck driver working 3 weeks a month or with weekends off?

Google truck driving jobs in your area and there will be a ton of companies wanting your services. Just tell them what you want and I'm sure someone will have the perfect job for you. Yes you can make more than $52,000 per year as a driver but not at first , it's a sucky job at first but after a year or 2 you should be able to figure it out.

The endorsements cost essentially nothing and can't hurt. If you're up against another applicant who doesn't have them and everything else is equal, you win. You can make that kind of money after getting a year or two of experience.

Yes endorsments are always good, they give way more options. Plus as slow stated they give you a leg up over another driver all things equal or may put you even with a slightly more experinced driver.

As for making money, yep ive made upwards of $175k a year (oilfield and then team driving doing specialized dedicated) with weekends off, though those was some stupidly stressful and/or dangerious jobs. Most of the really good paying jobs are in specialized fields, owner op assumeing you get lucky, and in long haul teaming. It can be done but.you need a lot of experince.

I know here in Atlanta you see Fed Ex Ground contractors looking for weekend drivers.

There are Temp Agencies for truck drivers called Driver Leasing Services. Those would be ideal for you as you can work for one company (DLS) but sample working at the trucking companies they supply drivers to.

The one thing you might have a problem is that in trucking, you can only work 70 hours in 8 days. Your regular jobs hour are counted in that 70. Sure you can just not count those and maybe get away with it, but if you were to get in a accident and the other job's hour came into play, you could be in deep stuff.
There probably are companies that would let you not count these hours, but a major like FedEx is not likely going to be one of them

That’s a good point. I usually work about 50 hours a week. Definitely something to keep in mind.

If you’re talking class A, the only companies that I know of that hire part-time drivers require experience. Where I work, all of the part-time guys are long timers that are now semi-retired. If you’re talking straight truck, there will be probably be more opportunities.
