If anyone is interested here is an update.
Insurance wise I got a quote for 16k a year with on hook. I spoke to most of the brokers I work with and the ones that wont accept on hook are not the ones that would have the work I am looking for anyway. So insurance is fine for now.
Was about to order a brand new freightliner built to my spec and the delivery date kept being pushed forward until it hit Jan 2022 and I canceled it all. Been searching for ones in stock for a few weeks now.
Found a great truck in stock in Indiana. Truck was ordered for a RV setup and had the L9 cummins, 3000rds Allison and strengthened chassis. Weighed way too much to put a shipshe bed on it. Truck scaled about 14k before build. Shipshe 22 foot with 30" extensions, bed + Lift is 5200 lbs. With all their aluminum upgrades I'd save just 500 lbs.
So the search for the right truck continues. Looking for an extended or crew cab with a B6.7 and 2500 Allison, low profile tires on aluminum rims. Extended cab is 11 feet bumper to back of cab and crew cab is just under 13 feet bbc. 24.5 foot bed (with extensions extended) would put me at 38 ft. Not sure what wheelbase would work best with this setup so I emailed Shipshe for a recommendation.
Im expecting the truck I am looking for to weigh around 11k before bed build and around 16,500 when all built. Leaves me with 9500 lbs to load 2 vehicles.
Who builds these 3 car upfits?

I’m assuming the M2 with the L9 was a single rear axle (most are) then the GCVW is 34000lbs.
So, if the chassis alone is 14000 and the bed is 5200 that’s 19200lbs not including fuel, people, gear... I’ll give that 800lbs so we are now at 20000 before even loading. Therefore the weight on the bed and the weight of the tow can not be over 14000lbs.
Now the UVW on a 20ft travel trailer is around 4500lbs and a 40ft can be up to 15000lbs. Restricting which trailers you load.
Now the second truck weighs in at 16500lbs Can still have a GCVR of 34000lbs. That’s 17500lbs of trailers you can take. Around 3500lbs more weight. Larger heavier trailers pay more.
So the only difference between the 6.7 and the L9 is speed up hills while under load. If I can get someplace 30min later with more weight and more money per mile. I’ll take the money.
i currently drive a M2 with the 6.7 and 2500 Alison about 500 miles per day with GCWR of 33000lbs. It’s a company truck so it’s not mine. I’ve put almost 140,000 miles on it in a year and a half. There are some trucks in the fleet with 750,000 miles on them. So it’ll last if you take care of it.Lonesome Thanks this. -
with an L9/allison weighs 14000, My 2010 single axle casacdia 60" sleeper with a DD13 and an ultrashift with all the bells and whistles only weighs 14500??? Maybe 12000 on that m2/l9/3000. I just looked it up. 6.7 with emissions is 1120# L9 with emissions is 1685# for 560# ill take that L9 any day of the week.24kHotshot Thanks this. -
In fact, I just checked the chassis weight of my new western stars, 4700, 40" sleeper DD13 470hp, DT12 tranny, single axle over a 280" wb, loaded int. best of everything dual 80 gal tanks, they weigh 14,050.

Spec sheet on a m2/b6.7/2500 was just a little over 10k curb weight.
Again, the shipshe bed was quoted at 5200 lbs with a car lift.
I wanted the L9 too but at 26k gvwr it didn't leave me enough room to load 2 cars. I don't even plan on towing trailers with it. Just a 2 normal car/1 large unit load running local/regional.Lonesome, Saltyoldone and KANSAS TRANSIT Thank this. -
Here is the weight sheet off the spec sheet. Note the body is listed as 3500# when it should be 5200#

Ok that makes more sense, I didnt realize you were trying to stay under 26,000,24kHotshot Thanks this. -
I can load 8000# on the deck and be right at 12000# steer and 20000# rear. If I tow I can have a, 1, one, 7000# vehicle on the deck and a 4000# car in tow.
if I had a tandem axle I could load 4 cars with weight to spare.KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this.
