Do you like any particular service for the permitting? I gather there are width permits, height permits for over 14 feet, and weight permits? What threshold dictates you need a pilot car? Why would you need two? Sounds like the pilot cars make good money. If a load pays $6/mi and you need a pilot car or two, that sure doesn’t leave much.

Also, if you have a 45 ton trailer and the load is less then 90k. Do you still need a weight permit? Or having more axles means your legal?

I still look at them when they pop up. A week or so ago was a Indianapolis to Syracuse @ $4k. 10+ wide, needed fully tarped. I thought about it and even called the broker back a couple of times for more information, but when I figured in the time & risk vs reward, I passed. The rather intensive tarping job is what got me on that one - I ended up clearing the same $ with legal loads and less sweat. Plus, I didn't have to go anywhere near Syracuse lol.

I'm not even experienced enough to be called green, but the time restrictions seems to be a huge obstacle. Maybe I'm factoring more lost time into "my price" than I need to, but I'd much rather feel good about the job afterwards than crying in the shower lol.

 

Thanks. Yeah I didn’t figure anything other then legal and easy would go for that. I did see some loads anywhere from 10 to 25 per mile. Those must be the more complicated loads!

I’m not trying to step on anybodies toes btw. I’m not setup to do anything like what you guys are doing. It’s very interesting though! One day as I grow tired of “normal” trucking and want to do something interesting myself, maybe this could be it.

 

That is great info for a baseline of knowledge. Essentially if your under 80k lbs, under 12 wide, and 13.5 to even 14 high then it’s no escorts nor permits other then width?

I’ll keep reading. It’s helps to understand this more when looking at loads and how they are priced.

 

Just as a lark, what would something like this pay. Putting on a RGN, legal height, would it be worth the effort.
