What @4noReason said, but to change the order, apply for a loan first then you know what price range you can shop for and let's them know you are serious. Commercial financing is waaaay different than personal financing.
After finding a truck you like: TAKE IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC to have is thoroughly checked out. Pull an oil sample, do a rig dig, get any and all repair records, put it on a dyno. DO NOT let them tell you, oh yea, sign here then we will take care of that problem you found. DO NOT sign anything until everything that needs to be done to that truck that they are saying they will take care of has been done. Slow down, take your time, don't be in a hurry.

More people spend more time researching a vacation than time spent doing their due diligence on a truck.

I purchased a truck from Arrow in Atlanta last April. It was a straight forward process with the usual credit check. Once approved for loan I made arrangements to go and check out the truck I wanted to look at. I was offered the opportunity to take it for a test drive and have any independent I'd like check it out, at my expense of course. I found the experience working with them to be about the norm for a vehicle dealer. Throughout the process, it was difficult getting someone on the phone as I had many questions- but they always got back to me. I've been happy with my purchase so far and have only had the usual items needing repairs on what should be expected for a truck my age and mileage. I'd purchase from them again.

I ended up with a '13 Volvo VNM with the D13 and 10spd. It was an Averitt Express truck in its prior life. Had 556k on odo. I've replaced airbags, brakes, drums, intake sensor, abs sensor(1), egr cooler, def sending unit and steer tires since I've owned it. Just regular maintenance really, I do all my own wrenching as Volvo has all their service bulletins in pdf online for free.
