I messed up today and lost a box off my load. I know it is my responsibility and I know when it happened, nothing else was damaged or lost. I'm an O/O with authority and have a few years in the business but only 6 months as an O/O and this has never happened to me before and I'm not sure what to do about it. Do I call the broker and let them contact the receiver and work it out? Do I tell the receiver when I arrive and try to pay for it there? I'd prefer not to get a claim on my insurance if I can avoid it and think the value of what was lost is around $600.

Was it a box of Jack Daniels and did you lose it on your 34?

    Don't rat yourself out.
It would be cost effective to pay the six hundred instead of insurance.

Tell the receiver what happened, offer to pay for the lost cargo, and, if the cargo wasn't hazmat, you should be alright.
600 bucks isn't worth going to the insurance company. You're probably already paying new guy rates so don't give them an excuse to jack it up farther.

It is a plant to plant delivery, I'm hoping that won't make it to much harder to just pay for it.

Don't say anything. Hopefully the receiver will just list it as short on the BOL and shipper will list it as being short as well. If not, they probably will take it out of your freight bill. If they charge you just pay for it, I am sure your deductible is $1000.
