In case one wanted to know, the unfortunate Ford that I encountered along the road was a gasoline powered pickup, and not a diesel. Purty sure it was an F-150.

I know some aftermarket turbo kits can be noisy if they up size the exhaust pipe. I think there’s a particular chrome/stainless exhaust tip that makes them sound like trash. Kinda like the Honda kids have been doing.

Did he oil your windshield when he passed you before it threw a rod? I’ve had that happen before with an old lifted ‘85 blazer that flew by me doing red line speed on I-10 toward Houston 25 years ago. Small blocks can take some abuse but that one was fedup with that kids attitude. Lol!

Thanks... I am familiar with the exhaust sound but this is a whining.. noise like a turbo or something. Again, it kinda sounds like a really bad slipping auto transmission. It races way up but the truck aint hardly going anywhere. If he gives it gas... fuel.. peddle... it whines way up, again like a slipping tranny. If he lets off the peddle, the whining gets slower/lower. It'll do it at any speed or any gear but its more noticeable at lower speeds/gears. Again, it reacts to pushing down or letting up on the peddle. The noise increases faster than the engine.
In reference to it sounding like a slipping auto transmission, its also like a slipping clutch in a standard/manual tranny. In that case, the engine runs faster than the tranny or vehicle.
Its kinda like a whirling or whining kinda sound. I think its something to do with the turbo but I dont know. I am lost with diesels.

Do the badges on the truck look like this:
    Capture2.PNG

The 6.0's had crazy loud spool up, but it's a shrill whistle, not a whine. If it's a whine, and he's a serious gearhead and not just some punk, there's a real possibility he's running a compound setup with a supercharger and a turbocharger. Way more whine than whistle.

Or does it sound like gear whine, like when you're driving with the transfercase in low range? Then again, he could be low on powersteering fluid too, lol.

The popular turbo impeller upgrade is called a whistling wheel.
