Apply now, or after moving in a year?

Hi, I am a class B driver (school bus, water tanker, mining haul truck). I am in Portland now but plan to move to Ft Worth sometime in 2022 (flexible but likely later in the year).

My goal is to get a Class A and get on with a line haul/LTL carrier such as ODL or FedEx Freight. I am not in rush, I can wait fir a good opportunity.

My question is how do carriers treat driver moves? Does it make any difference if I apply now, get trained, work a few months in Portland and then turn around and move to FT Worth terminal? Or is that frowned on and I should wait until after I move.

I want to get in with a quality company and don’t want to screw up 6 months into my career with them. Advice?

Start now, then you'll be qualified for a good line haul job in Ft. Worth. Don't wait to become qualified; start now.
Here's some in Portland where you can get started. They train drivers with a CDL-A Permit, so you should be ok.
    YRC
    Yellow
    Reddaway
    Old Dominion Freight Line
    ABF Freight
    FedEx Freight

YRC also has a driving academy in Ft. Worth.
All those companies have facilities in Ft. Worth or Dallas.

With any of those companies you can transfer to Ft. Worth; don't have to quit, then start over.

So carriers don’t care if you want to transfer? They just consider you still in the big corporate pool either way? No dings to your reputation fir working six months and then move?

btw, thank you very much for all the info you list here. Trying to get started is confusing at times v

Right, you're not quitting; you're transferring to another terminal with the same company.

OK another question then. I did apply to all of these about 4-6 weeks ago on their websites. I was all excited about the big demand fir drivers. But no word from them, not even acknowledging they received my application.

About three weeks after applying and not hearing anything I was offered a good class B job. So I took that as a stopgap until I get my class A. I did go ahead and get my Class A learning permit with all the endorsements possible since then.

I don’t have a specific contact at these companies since I got no replies. Should I apply again with updated resume or walk into a terminal and ask to see a recruiter, or call the main number and ask? What is the culture at these carriers and what path to follow up would be most effective with them? I have heard some companies may take months before they contact you if they have a lot of applications received?

Might as well go in person and say, "I'm checking on my job application."
Maybe the application didn't reach the local terminals, but only the national headquarters.
A few drivers on this forum already training at YRC/Yellow Academy at various locations.
