That could be the case. They invested quite an effort into their 360 app that has got quite a volume of loads, relatively speaking. How good or bad they pay on is another matter - depending on the overall market situation. They do advertise a lot and solicit for the Power Only division too. Once, I was itching to try it, tired of poor spot market at the time but never finalized it. Part of the reason was that they said that I could pick my own freight but after signing the paperwork, they said that first I need to go where they say. I said no thanks, and backed out of the deal.

Unless JB plans to buy it's own power units, it's own belly cars, lay it's own track, and open it's own ramps, the railroads are already operating at or above capacity and not able to move equipment. Not uncommon for the Thursday train to arrive on Thursday morning, instead of Weds. night, and not be unloaded until Sat. morning. The UPRR just imposed its summer surcharge, 2 months early, because of excess cans and no equipment. All non-domestic containers heading to UP ramps have to have a waybill and reservation or they won't be let in, and/or flipped once they get in the gate. Not uncommon for us to have loads sitting in our yard for 3 or 4 days waiting reservation, despite having a waybill. Few weeks back, every dray company in Denver had at least a dozen exports sitting idle either in their yard, or stored in a different yard.

So placing a large order for containers would make sense if they had someplace to store them while they’re waiting to be shipped on the rail, almost like portable temporary warehouses for their customers.

Never forget delivering to one in TN. Went to guard shack gave them all the info I was given as far as bol, appt etc and they refused me, said I needed a specific delivery number or whatever. Get turned around find a place to park while dispatch figured out what they were talking about. An hour later they give me a number, I go back and the same girl, says "Yes, we already have you on the system at the correct appointment time, but we just needed to hear you say the specific number before we could let you in".

Closest I have ever come to cussing out a customer.

Not sure where they would store them, unless they plan on buying up land around the country. In Denver, both the BNSF and UPRR, which handle JB containers have been so backed up with cans lately, they have been stacking them in places where loaded cans would normally be staged, until there is space on the train.

They still are, just outside Bridgeport, Ne., there's a dozen BNSF locomotives parked unused, same in Grand Junction, Co., there's probably 70 UPRR locomotives and 30 BNSF. Read an article a few months back, the BN has 60 parked on sidings in SLC. The UP has been doing the same all over, the thing is, as they cut manpower via retirement, to be more enviro friendly, etc., both railroads, but more so the UP, have been running longer trains, with smaller crews. Instead of 3 1 mile trains with 6 locomotives each and a crew of 3 each, they now have 1 3 mile train, with 7 locomotives and a crew of 3. Not uncommon to see along I-80, this is especially the case with stack trains, but the BN has been doing it with empty coal trains heading back to the coal field in Wyoming. Have also seen both rails do this with empty hopper/grain car setups. But, they can only do it in some areas, like the mainlines.

Who knows what their plan is. But it’s foolish to think they would spend this kind of money without some sort of plan. 12000 new containers is a fairly substantial order.
