Cricket season in central Texas is the worst I've seen. We can all count ourselves that the Rocky Mountain Locust is extinct. They died out right at the dawn of photography. There are photos. Looks insane, like tornado weather, except it's bugs.

I've always followed truckers especially on long trips. I don't tailgate, and keep a good distance. It helps for a more relaxing drive. I don't text or talk on my phone. Recently though when I purchased a newer model vehicle, I have noticed that when I am behind a Truck I get much better gas mileage. Less wind drag.

When I am driving in a car at night, I will tuck myself in behind a truck but I stay back about 100 yards. I set my cruise control to match the truck in front of me.
If he suddenly stops, I know i can stop faster than he does. The truck in front of me is a headlight extender. I can see if there is a curve in the road.
If there is suddenly a traffic jam I know about it in plenty of time. I also know what lane to be in because the trucker has gotten on his CB and found out so I change lanes with him. I'm sure it is disconcerting at first but when the driver figures out that I am not a cop and I am not tailgating him, he gets use to it. I have even had trucks flash their tail lights as they take an exit... sorta like saying good bye.

You have to be very close to the back of a truck to draft into their vacuum tunnel. Too close to stop safely if the truck in front of you slams on their brakes. If your new car has collision avoidance connected to the cruise control system, the car might be able to stop in time, but if you are controlling the car, you'll be under the DOT bumper by the time you start to brake.

I got followed by a car right into a weigh station the other day. As she went past me in the empty lane she had her phone up to her ear. Yep kept right on talking as she went past the office and yep a DOT truck followed her out and pulled her over, justice.

I'll follow trucks from time to time. Usually let them bird dog since I don't really want to shell out $$$$ for a radio (VHF ain't cheap lol).
