Taller and shorter refers to the diameter of the ring gear
When installed they are on edge and 1 is taller than the other.

Back in the day when 12 bolt rear was the thing to have in a GM. You can't put 456 gears in a 3 series carrier and you can't put 308's in a 4 series carrier. Well without serious modifications you can;t.

If you have 4.11's, and 3.54's, the 3.54's are the taller, longer, higher gear of the two.Rideandrepair, Bean Jr. and Hammer166 Thank this. -

The ring gear tho Not necessarily the pinion.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Unless I'm just completely misunderstanding what you're getting at.Rideandrepair, Bean Jr. and Hammer166 Thank this. -
They make a spacer and longer bolts to put say 4.11 on a carrier that had 3.08 or where ever the split was. The ring is the same diameter on both. The pinion is bigger in circumference on higher gears is why the back spacing is different. You cannot however use a 4.11 carrier with 3.08

The answer to the equation is stated as 3.55 to 1.
41divided by 10 is 4.1 so the ratio of the gears is 4.1-1 and 4.10-1 is the same answer. The 0 means nothing.
Also 37 teeth divided by 9 teeth is still 4.1-1 ratio.Rideandrepair and God prefers Diesels Thank this. -
Rideandrepair Thanks this.
