Everyone my age that has quit has been hospitalized for lung issues. Cold turkey was easy then.
Not so easy when there is no impending doom, although there is, it’s just not as important it seems -
I switched to cigars.

I’ve been an on-again off-again smoker/nicotine user since I was an 18 or 19 year old college boy. I do get the agitated withdrawal symptoms if I get back into it too regularly but I try to ride that razor edge of being able to enjoy a couple socially if I’m at the bar but basically not worrying about it under normal daily routine. Usually I have no problem putting them away if life is going smoothly enough. When things get rocky or weird I tend to find some comfort in a pack of smokes when I need to do some figurin’.

I quit twice.
The first time was cold turkey and it lasted about 10 years. Hard as hell to do. I have no idea how I made it the first 3 months or so without starting again.
The second time I weaned myself off. Much, much easier than cold turkey for me. I'd set a date/time when I could have a cigarette and stick to it. So for example, each day at noon I can have one, and another before bed. Then I'd go to two days, then three. There was always a cigarette coming and that gave me the power to wait for it. Eventually, I got to the point were there were no more coming.JoeyJunk and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
That would last me almost 3 weeks.bryan21384 and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
Growing up I had an aunt that would smoke a cig then light the next one of the one she was smoking. Don't know how many packs a day she smoked but I know it must have been a few. I had got up to about 2 1/2 packs a day when I quit for the last time.
JoeyJunk Thanks this. -
I have set my "quit" date. I have quit several times over the years, but without much conviction or success! June 7..... I will have nicotine gum on the truck. That was always the best "crutch " for me in the past. I will keep you all posted on my success/ failure. I really appreciate all of the replies
