Just bought a train with a cummins. Cpl676 so that appears to be a bc3 nt855 according to quick serve. My motor appears to be weeping oil from the head gaskets. My mech wants to change the head gaskets. According to this thread I just read it should be left alone, is that the consensus?
She drove from Minnesota to Texas just fine. She smokes like a train on start up and a little haze after shes warm. Ridiculous on fuel mileage she barely used half a tank.
Big cam hg question

That should be a Big Cam 4. Not uncommon with age for them to seep a little, but I’d be sure you don’t have another problem before letting anyone tear into it. I’ve seen the end of the rocker shaft leak and seep oil down in between the heads. Had that problem myself on my BC couple years ago. That one picture looks like the exhaust is dribbling down on the block.......?jamespmack, Bias_racing, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I dont think its the exhaust its coming from, i think its right below coming out of the head.
She doesnt appear to have any blow by.
Other issues like what? What you thinking?
She just drove from Minnesota to Texas with no issues. -
Leaks are only going to get worse the more the engine works
With 0 experience with cummins (so i may be flat put wrong) i agree with your mechanic, it would be wise to pull the heads and redo the head gasketsBias_racing Thanks this. -
I make my living with a Big Cam, matter of fact I just got back from NY......
Look closely before you spend $$ you don’t have to is all I’m saying. Looks to me the exhaust where it bolts to the head is very dark looking, you may have a injector slobbering and not an oil leak.
More than one thing will give the visual I’m seeing in the picture.....
Diesel Dave, clausland, jamespmack and 4 others Thank this. -

Clean it really good 1st then see if you can find where it's coming from before tearing anything apart. In the winter when I idle a lot i get some slobber that you'd swear was the head gasket
clausland, OLDSKOOLERnWV and Bias_racing Thank this.
