I'm considering stalling out until the new year though. By the time I bobtail up to NE and pick up the trailer, the full weeks of the year will be gone and I'll only have a couple of half weeks left to pull freight.
Notes on the truck:
After having the tires balanced and rotated on my truck (some of the wheels took a half pound of weight), I realized the front air bag that's been leaking has gotten worse. Running on borrowed time is one thing (for a month), but pushing it is just wreckless.
I'll be trying to figure out how to come up with the money to change those bags (both if I can), and working on getting a small business loan to start a fuel and maintenance account. There's also an oil and lube coming up too soon to save for later, and I have a 500k mile service due on the engine - although that can wait if it needs to.
I've been looking to having a few fleet restrictions flashed out of the ECM - it's locked down to 70mph and 1800rpm. It's a Cummins ISX 15 Liter @475HP and 1,650ft/lbs - but they're easily good for 500 to 525 and 1,850 - with a 2000rpm limiter. The higher revs would be good for pulling upshifts when climbing, and I think the higher HP would do some good because the peak horsepower rating is at 2,100rpm right now and I never make it up that far.
The 13 speed I have is rated at 1,650ft/lbs, but a friend told me that it should be able to handle 1,850 without "buying the Pharm" (sorry, I had to *grin*). The advice came from a knowledgable source, so I'll have to see if a shop can hook that up for me. Torque is where you get a broad powerband and most of your mpg - so an improvement would pay for itself fast. -
Buying the Pharm, that's pretty good. Getting a loan for maintenance not a bad idea unless it has high interest. You might check some salvage yards for some air bags. They may not be any better but it might be worth a shot.
