18 year old into trucking

You're in a good area for agriculture, check with local graineries and see if they are hiring or know a local farmer who might be. At 18 there's not really many opportunities with insurance requirements today.

 

If you are close to austin/Scottsburg i can give ya a number that would probably hire him. It be hard work but they pay fair only down side is all there trucks are automatic so if you can get him his cdl that be the thing to do

 

Might also try looking into the expedited freight using sprinter vans or mini vans

I know a few people doing that and it’s good money. They own their van and use some dispatch boards that are mostly for expedited freight. That has one or two boxes or one or two pallets ,

the vans are all under the weight limit so no logbooks no CDL no weigh stations etc .

if he’s interested or has any mechanical ability, get him in a community college or vo tech school class for hvac or welding or something .
Or find a job as an apprentice plumber or Electrictian.
Every trade is begging for workers.
If he can pass the drug test and show up on time every morning , and remember what they try to teach him every day, he’s miles ahead of most every other young person.

 

What do you mean OTR could hurt? I think most companies want OTR experience.

As mentioned above, all of the construction trades are BEGGING for workers. I would recommend HVAC or Plumbing. Huge demand in those industries. I would lean towards Commercial over Residential. Most big Companies will put him in an Apprenticeship program for 2-3 years and pay him pretty well while he learns the trade. Good luck!

 

Look at the Ltl companies. They need dock workers and yard drivers. When he turns 21, let them put him thru school.

 

I think the mega will want him to go though can't think of the name bit it like cdl school I know a pig hauler in thay area that well more then likely hire him home nightly or like the guy above me said look for farmer near you with truck most of them would hire anyone
