My nephew graduated and doesnt have his eye on college in the near term, he can back his dads trailer and gooseneck and kinda seems to want to try trucking.
I can help in a limited fashion, help teach the practical pretrip and tests, logbooks, introduce him to what it is like on the road a bit as a ridealong and teach him to drive a manual, securement for flatbed etc etc
Where im a bit lost is in getting him a job. I know he will be limited to intrAstate but if he doesnt go through a cdl school, is he stuck in dump and cement trucks? And at 21 if he wants to do otr, is that going to hurt his longer term prospects?
Indiana, south of indianapolis (central to the state, so that SHOULD help)
Just looking for some guesses and opinions

Might also try looking into the expedited freight using sprinter vans or mini vans
I know a few people doing that and it’s good money. They own their van and use some dispatch boards that are mostly for expedited freight. That has one or two boxes or one or two pallets ,
the vans are all under the weight limit so no logbooks no CDL no weigh stations etc .
if he’s interested or has any mechanical ability, get him in a community college or vo tech school class for hvac or welding or something .
Or find a job as an apprentice plumber or Electrictian.
Every trade is begging for workers.
If he can pass the drug test and show up on time every morning , and remember what they try to teach him every day, he’s miles ahead of most every other young person.SoulScream84, slow.rider, Dockbumper and 1 other person Thank this. -

(personally if he demonstrates work ethic ill just try and get him to buy a truck and run wherever i am, but unsure of how insurance companies will deal with the local experience especially on a much younger kid) -
As mentioned above, all of the construction trades are BEGGING for workers. I would recommend HVAC or Plumbing. Huge demand in those industries. I would lean towards Commercial over Residential. Most big Companies will put him in an Apprenticeship program for 2-3 years and pay him pretty well while he learns the trade. Good luck!SoulScream84 and slow.rider Thank this. -
Look at the Ltl companies. They need dock workers and yard drivers. When he turns 21, let them put him thru school.

Heh, everyone saying get him on with a farmer. I dont want to kill the poor boy.
Lets put it this way, all of you here that came to trucking through farming, the learning curve was steep and you made it, but look at everyone that didnt. I genuinely dont know his work ethic or if he even just isnt cut out for it or its a perfect fit, what i do know, i would like to give him a fighting chance at enjoying his job.
The irony is it would be quite easy to get a farmer to take him, his dad is a crop insurance and soil sample guy accross the center swath of the state for quite a few years, he knows pretty much all the farmers (in crops, livestock not so much)Coffey Thanks this.
