Personal use that's true. Commercial use they don't need as reason as it's one of those regulations that assume consent by simply engaging in commercial transportation. Think about it. How could someone ever get pulled in the a chicken coop randomly for a level 1 unless the officer sees a violation? If they required probable cause then there would never be a clean level 1 given.

This has happened to a driver at the company I work for. He got a citation because he left one of the fuel nozzles unattended. Hauling hazmat, which he was, makes this illegal. He (like most of us) never expect to have an inspection while getting fuel, and we get a little complacent.
Best of luck with the inspection!

Do commercial vehicles under 10,001 lbs also get these inspections?

negative. you can say that all you want becuase you have NEVER challenged it. thats what you are led to belive and they want that. Company drivers dont care so much but owner operators that own the truck sure do. NO THEY CANNOT JUST RANDOMLY pull you over. Yes i know this for a fact becuase yes i challenge. What have you done and what experience do you have in the matter. NONE you never challenged

Dont feel too bad. I was in ohio and had just pulled out of the girard, oh petro yesterday. Got about 10 miles on the toll road and got pulled over for a level one. Apparently one of my roof markers burned out and i either missed it on my pretrip or it popped after i left. Got up to the travel plaza to see about a light and there were 6 troopers inspecting trucks as they pulled in.

Omg. ITs probably easier talking to the paint on my wall. Im not here to persuade you to do anything. Owner operators know their rights. AND NO commercial vehicle DOES NOT make you give up rights and probable cause. Take a criminal law class or 2 if your rights mean anything to you. IF not and you are happy to just waive them, carry on with life. NEver did i say refuse anything or give the cops a hard time. Alls thats gonna do is delay you. Take it to court and get it all thrown out and persue further if you want for down time. GEtting fuel and recieing dot inspection wont hold up in court if you know your rights. Niether does some cop standing on side of highway flagging you over with no cause. Like i said, people like you just pay the fines or forward them to the boss. Happy day for the revenue machine
