Hello all,
Reaching out with a question on larger displacement Cummins motors. Specifically, I'm looking for info on Cummins engines available on Medium and Heavy duty trucks. I'm interested in an older/used (1980-2000) truck that can replace my current towing set up.
At the moment, I'm pulling my excavating equipment with a 1.5 ton pickup and trailer rated for 15k lbs. I like what I have as it gives me lots of options but the more I mess with trailers, ramps, and electric trailer brakes, the more I'm looking at larger displacement trucks with roll-back beds that can handle my requirements.
I'm not looking for huge GVWR numbers but I do need 25' of rollback bed to fit my equipment. As little weight as I carry, it will be like driving the thing empty but that will be a huge improvement over the engine and brakes on the 1.5 ton cab and chassis set up I'm running now.
I'm looking to learn more about the available engine and transmission combinations in trucks sold between 1980-2000 (I don't think I can afford anything newer). I definitely want a manual transmission and I'd like to see what Cummins are still availble, which engines are considered more reliable, what to avoid, etc.
In short, more info on what Cummins engines are available in these trucks would help me figure out what I'm looking for. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Either a L10 or a M11 would be My suggestion...

Well one option is instead of a rollback you could buy an actual dump truck and pull a tag along trailer. Then when you are doing the Excavating you have a truck to move the dirt around or haul Stone from the quarries or whatever else you do.
Whether a dump truck or a rollback you should look and see what type of the truck you're looking for and what GVW and what are you looking for a single axle or a tandem axle... That would be easier to figure what engines are in those trucks. If we know what GVWR you are looking for and whether it's a single axle or a tandem it will be easier to figure what you need.
Keep in mind that if you are pulling say ten thousand plus the trailer you will feel that with a medium duty truck. A regular heavy duty truck say with a big cam Cummins you won't feel it back there. -

The equipment I'm moving is (max) at the end of 15K lbs. I can probably fit everything on a shorter rollback but if I want everything to load nice and centered, I'l need to get close to the 25' bed size.
I wouldn't be opposed to a regular heavy duty platform, I just want to and need to learn more about them before I start actively trying to buy one. It seems like there aren't many older rollbacks. Maybe I'm doing this all wrong and I should be looking for the right truck and then adding a suitable bed for it.
