Car transportation?

I’ve heard hauling cars have more insurance claim risk, because some places like to blame some pre-existing damage on the delivery driver.

 

Many Carhaul companies use owner operators but most won’t lease on anyone without carhauling experience. They are doing their customers and an owner op a favor by requiring experience. Those same companies will hire an experienced driver and train them to haul cars. When you have enough Car-hauling experience you can buy a carhauler (not generally a trailer for your road tractor) and lease on to them.

 

That will be a tougher market to consistently make great money in. Most Snowbirds have been using the same company for years and you may or may not get a part of that business. Having hauled mostly new cars now for nearly 10 years, I want absolutely no part of hauling Snowbirds or used cars. The used car market is generally spot market which is crazy money now, but can be crazy low at times also. I personally like being leased to a new car carrier with long term contracts in place where I know exactly what I will be making for the next 3 years with $2 a gallon diesel or $5 a gallon diesel. Some people will tell you they can make more money hauling used cars for nearly a dollar a mile per car, but I really doubt long term they can beat the consistency of long term contract freight. It is a big world and what works for one person does not work for everyone. I like consistency and running a regular route which gets me home most nights and pays me well if I am willing to stay loaded and not tear stuff up.

 

I was contemplating my next endeavor hauling cars ( I could do damage ) or hauling cattle (they could do me damage ).

 

I have never hauled more than a few cows at a time, but I don’t like the idea of 50,000 lbs of cattle leaning into a curve at the same time. I will stick to cars for now.
