I reached out to this forum for input when I was thinking of becoming a Truck Driver so I thought I would post my update and how it worked out. At the age of 50 I went out and got my AZ license at a local Training Academy. I found a job and started local part time while still being a full time Mechanic. The first job was not so good and I quit after 6 month from dispatchers that thought they could treat me like they wanted. I was thinking of throwing the entire idea out and just staying on the bench.

A friend called and said Brian Kurtz Trucking was looking for Drivers. I applied and got the job, it was not common for them to hire a rookie so I was extremely fortunate. This is when my career took a turn for the best. This group is the top of the food chain. My travel agents (dispatchers) are second to none. We work together and even when things get a little hairy they always have my back. The mechanics are a crack shot group that could be a pit crew for a Nascar Team. It’s not uncommon for them to look at my truck before they punch in. It is very comforting when you go through a safety blitz and you know your ride is the best. The dock crew is as the rest of the team are, simply the best. Mistakes from this group are as rare as an eclipse. Always willing to help and their sense of humor at the end of the day is sure appreciated. My fellow drivers have been the most helpful sharing all their little tricks that you don’t learn in a school, this is what makes being a trucker easier on a rookie.

The safety /office staff are as fair and helpful as they can be and that’s all we can ask for. We are kept up to date and informed on every level. Twice a year safety meetings are held and Brian Kurtz himself insisted on a meal fit for a king/Queen. While his presence is dearly missed the 4 boys (Trevor /Brent Gerrad/Geordie) have continued to run the company like Dad was watching over ( I believe he is) It is not uncommon at the end of a 13 hour day to get back to the yard, reach for the air brake and park in the yard. Look out the passenger side window and one of the boys is just getting in after hauling a load to help us get done what we need to. This depth and commitment is what sets them aside from others. The equipment we drive and haul is the best in the industry, cooled leather seats, cab heaters and clean units is all part of the recipe.

We have an idle bonus system,if you choose to idle you give it up, it is ours for the taking. Some do some don't. We have other incentives and they are attainable. No rear facing camera in our trucks.rider policy is a sign in thing,and pet policy is allowed and we are given a phone allowance..They are as fair as can be and stay competitive in an otherwise cut throat industry.
